Renewing your Firearm licence and Competency Certificate in South Africa

YOU MUST RENEW YOUR PERSONAL FIREARM LICENCE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF EXPIRY!

  • Please check the vailidty dates on your firearm licence ( the licence to carry and possess a particular firearm for a specific purpose).
  • Also ensure that your competency certificate (the certificate issued by the poilce to confirm that a background check and other formalities have been conducted by the police) has not expired.
  • Keep in mind that the  two documents above may expire on different dates.
  • Always stick to the 90 day rule.

The procedure to renew your firearm licence- where you were trained by Vital Skills

You need  to apply to and submit the following with the local police designated firearm officer in your area;

1. Training certificate and Statement of Results -Contact us for an updated firearm training certificate and statement of results. You WILL have to submit these to the police.( There is a fee for this)
2. Certified South African  ID
3. Original firearm licence that is about to expire
4. Police application form - SAP517
5. R75-00 cash per licence  to be paid at the police station in question
6. Two colour photos per licence
7. Your competency certificate. 


The procedure to renew your firearm licence- where you were NOT trained by Vital Skills

You need  to apply to and submit the following with the local police designated firearm officer in your area;

1. Training certificate and Statement of Results  - You WILL have to submit these to the police.(There is a fee for this)

Contact us for an updated firearm training certificate and statement of results. You may need to be retrained if:
  • you do not have your original training provider certificate or it has expired, or
  • you original training provider has not registered you with the Professional Firearm Trainers Council

2. Certified South African  ID
3. Original firearm licence that is about to expire
4. Police application form - SAP517
5. R75-00 cash per licence  to be paid at the police station in question
6. Two colour photos per licence
7. Your competency certificate. 



The procedure to renew your firearm competency certificate
(This is the certificate that confirms your fitness to possess a firearm)

You need  to apply to and submit the following with the local police designated firearm officer in your area;

1. Original competency certificate that is about to expire.
2. Training certificate and Statement of Results  - You WILL have to submit these to the police.(There is a fee for this)
3. Certified South African  ID
4. Original firearm licence that is about to expire
5. Police application form - SAP517
6. R75-00 cash per competency certificate to be paid at the police station in question
7. Fingerprints will be taken by the police
8. You will need two letters of reference of good character (always one from your spouse).

What is a Firearm Competency Certificate?

This is a certificate to confirm that you are fit to possess a firearm .Issued by the SA Police  and requires fingerprinting and a background check.

What is a Firearm licence

This is the actual licence to possess a specific firearm for a specfic reason.
You cannot use a firearm unless it is for the purpose it is licenced to you.
Some reasons may be :
1. Self Defence
2. Sport Shooting
3. Hunting
4. Business purposes ( training compnaies, security companies, displays and movie companies etc)
